For my winter project, (rumour has it we will be locked down again soon, so need to prepare the ‘entertainment’), I fancy building a springer tug, but with a Z-Peller Azimuth Thruster (Z-Drive) Propulsion!

To give me a head start I plan to use a Aero Kits Ramborator as a basic kit model, and modify it to accept the Z-Drive.
First step to build the hull, I filled the pre cut slots in the kit for the prop shaft as I wont be having one.

OK, normally I use Tamiya TS-33 for tug hulls, looks great as anti fouling, and decent quality, but my local model shop was out of stock, so I took a punt on this Hycote stuff, wish I hadnt its nothing like the colour on the lid and now resembles a pillar box…

While I wait for the paint I’ll take a look at the propulsion system, quick test, nothings lined up but I couldnt resist testing it out.
Made a bit of progress on the superstructure (repainted the Hull in Tamya TS-33)

Well looks like were headed into another National Lockdown, so will have some time to concentrate on fitting the drive.
Prepared the mast, and railings.

Dry fit test.

Added a captain, he’s a bit of a short arse but will suffice!

Time to get the drive in the hull

Adding a few bulkheads to support the drive, and create compartments to fill with lead
Testing the operation of the Z Drive steering

Well we still have another week of lockdown, and she’s finished, cant get out to a lake to test, so decided to make a barge!

Enjoyed building the springer tug & barge, will concentrate on the Arun over Christmas.
Can yo email me sa parts that you use to build this? I badly need this propeller for my project.
